Sewing Class Descriptions

Sewing Year 1-4: 2nd – 5th Grade (Pre-Requisite: None)

Classes are designed for the beginner as well as students with some sewing experience. Students will learn sewing machine parts/functions, how to layout, read and understand basic patterns. Students will also learn how to properly pin and cut fabric, and how to straight stitch and zigzag. Lessons will
start with our sew fun! Sewing School- Beginners and/or sew fun! Sewing School- Teens Workbooks and progress until the student is ready to use sew fun! Sewing School- Crafts Workbook and/or commercial patterns. All students are encouraged to compete sewing projects at their own pace.

Registration Fee: $20 (sewing tools/supplies used during class scissors, seam gauges, rulers, straight pins, needles, marking pencils, interfacing, etc.)

Teen Sewing Year 1-4: 6th – 12th Grade (Pre-Requisite: None)

Classes are designed for the beginner as well as students with some sewing experience. Students will learn sewing machine parts/functions, how to layout, read and understand basic patterns. Students will also learn how to properly pin and cut fabric, and how to straight stitch and zigzag. Lessons will start with our Sew Fun! TM Sewing School Workbook and progress to commercial patterns selected by the teacher. Students will develop sewing skills while completing sewing projects at their own pace.

Registration Fee: $20 (sewing tools/supplies used during class- scissors, seam gauges, rulers, straight pins, needles, marking pencils, interfacing, etc.)

Adult Sewing: 18 and up (Pre-Requisite: None)

Classes are designed for the beginner as well as students with some sewing experience. Students will learn sewing machine parts/functions, how to layout, read and understand basic patterns. Depending on the class projects, additional skills taught may include: how to take measurements, read a pattern envelope to determine your pattern size and how to read pattern instructions to cut and construct a sewing project.

Fashion Design Descriptions

Fashion Design Jr.: 4th – 5th Grade and up (Prerequisite: 2 semesters of Sew Fun! Sewing School and a teacher recommendation

Classes are designed for students with a year of more of successful sewing experience. Students will learn Fashion Design Basics/Introduction: Students will learn about a career as a fashion designer, the history of fashion, and designers who define fashion history. Students will also get an introduction to: Fashion Design Elements: color, line, silhouette, texture/fabrics; Fashion Design Principles: balance, rhythm, proportion, emphasis. Students will experience the Fashion Design Process as they use teacher selected commercial patterns for inspiration to sketch designs. Students will select a final design and fabrics. Finally, students will observe how to make adjustments to the pattern and sew their designs. Students will have homework.

There are additional cost for this class: Once final designs are complete, you will receive the materials list.

Fashion Design: 6th Grade and up (Prerequisite: 2 semesters of Sew Fun! Sewing School and a teacher recommendation

Classes are designed for students with a year of more of sewing experience. Students will learn Fashion Design Basics/Introduction: Students will learn about a career as a fashion designer, the history of fashion, and designers who define fashion history. Students will also get an introduction to: Fashion Design Elements: color, line, silhouette, texture/fabrics; Fashion Design Principles: balance, rhythm, proportion, emphasis. Students will experience the Fashion Design Process as they use on-trend patterns from FashionKit for inspiration to sketch designs. Students will select a final design and fabrics. Finally, students will observe how to make any necessary adjustments to their patterns and sew their designs. Students will have homework.

There are additional cost for this class: During the summer, we will order each student a FashionKit $45.00. The FashionKit includes: 4 patterns, detailed design guide/style sheets, and online sewing instructions/videos. Once final designs are complete, you will receive the materials list.

Fashion Design II: 7th Grade and up (Prerequisite: 2 semesters of Fashion Design and a teacher recommendation

Classes are designed for students with a year of more of Fashion Design classes. Students have learned Fashion Design Basics: career as a fashion designer, the history of fashion, and designers who define fashion history. Students will continue to learn about: Fashion Design Elements: color, line, silhouette, texture/fabrics; Fashion Design Principles: balance, rhythm, proportion, emphasis. Students will continue to experience the Fashion Design Process as they use on-trend patterns from FashionKit for inspiration to sketch designs. Students will select a final design and fabrics. Finally, students will observe how to make adjustments to their pattern and sew their designs. Students will have homework.

Fashion Design III: 7th Grade and up (Prerequisite: 4 semesters of Fashion Design and a teacher recommendation

Classes are designed for students with a two or more years of Fashion Design classes. Students have learned Fashion Design Basics: career as a fashion designer, the history of fashion, and designers who define fashion history. Students will continue to learn about: Fashion Design Elements: color, line,
silhouette, texture/fabrics; Fashion Design Principles: balance, rhythm, proportion, emphasis. Students will continue to experience the Fashion Design Process as they use on-trend patterns from FashionKit for inspiration to sketch designs. Students will select a final design and fabrics. Finally, students will learn how to make adjustments to their pattern and sew their designs. Students will also begin how to drape a bodice and make a pattern. Students will have homework.

Registration Fee: $20 (sewing tools/supplies used during class- scissors, seam gauges, rulers, straight pins, needles, marking pencils, interfacing, patterns, etc. There are additional cost for this class: FashionKit (1-2), materials needed for draping, and materials for final designs.
